Up For Grabs: University of the Philippines Graduate

Look what I found.

Human For Sale.com

The intro in the site says:

Have you been thinking about putting yourself up for sale lately? Ever wonder how much money you could get on the open human market? HumanForSale.com will attempt to place a value on your life using a variety of criteria in 4 basic facets of life (physical, mental, lifestyle, personality). This is obviously a very subjective matter and is not intended and does not claim to be scientifically accurate. The more honestly you answer the questions, the more realistic the dollar value returned will be.

Anyway, after answering some questions, I received an email telling me my worth:

You are worth exactly: $1,831,060.00.

Whoa! Not bad, eh?

Now if only I could find someone wealthy enough to purchase me. Heh heh!

Have a great weekend, people.

This Week's Friday Five:

1. What was the last TV show you watched?
Last night, Hunski and I watched three episodes of Alias. An officemate lent him the complete season 1 of the series.

2. What was the last thing you complained about?
I'm in the mall right now. And there are lots of people, probably because it's a holiday for a lot of people. I just hate it when the mall gets so crowded. Good thing this Internet Cafe is tucked in the corner of a bookstore where there are hardly any people.

3. Who was the last person you complimented and what did you say?
Hunski. This morning while he was preparing for work. I was watching him. I think I told him how pogi (FYI, pogi is handsome in Filipino) he was.

4. What was the last thing you threw away?
The last thing I threw away? Uhm, it's actually things. I cleaned out the refrigerator yesterday and boy, the stuff that I found.

5. What was the last website (besides this one) that you visited?
Right now, I'm visiting Friendster, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail.

What To Do?

It's a long weekend for almost the entire Philippines beginning this Friday. It has something to do with the All Saints Day and All Souls Day on November 1 and 2, respectively. I dunno how it is like in other countries but here in the Philippines, a lot of families go to the cemeteries to pay respect to loved ones who have gone ahead of us. Thus, the President declared Friday a holiday so that those who need to go to the provinces for the occasion may have an extra day for traveling.

In my case, the long weekend begins tomorrow. Yup. Yup. Woohoo! I have four days of no work. Haha!

Tomorrow is the last of my four personal days that I get for the overtime work I had during the pre-anniversary preparations. Yay! I'm not sure yet what to do for the coming days. Although I do have to go to the bank tomorrow to settle some bills, I still dunno what to do for the rest of the day.

Think. Think.

Well, maybe I can clean up the room again, rearrange stuff. When I got home last night, I found myself going through my closet folding my clothes neatly, separating the whites from the colored ones, the ones I could use at home and the one I use when I go out of the house. Then, I changed my bed sheet and blanket. And after this, I began rearranging the things on the two tables beside my bed. (Yes, I said two back there) I swear I am turning into my Mom.

I can also start looking for a pair of black leather shoes. The one I'm using is already begging me to let it retire so I really need to get a new one. Even if I don’t want to shell out cash because I just shopped for my birthday, I really need to buy a new pair. Notice how I emphasize the words want and need. Heh heh. In any case, I don't think I can spend that much on shoes. Let me correct that. I don't want to spend much on shoes. On bags, yes. But shoes? Not really unless I'm getting this wonderful pair I've been dreaming of.

But right now, the thing that I’ve really been wanting to do is go to the Starbucks near the apartment, get myself a tall Green Tea Frappuccino, find the most comfortable seat and finish reading The Devil Wears Prada.

Wouldn’t that be a very nice thing?

As for the things that I would do from Friday to Sunday, ah never mind. Maybe it would actually be good not to think of what to do. Just spend the days at the apartment with Hunski, cook maybe, play badminton at the park, go walking or even better – sleep.

Whatever.

I just can't wait for today to be over. Hope your day is going well.

Pinoy Trivia of the Week:

Several foreigners who have visited the Philippines have probably noticed that Filipinos, in general, can understand the English language. Even those who are in the rural areas know the English up to a certain extent.

I dunno if it's because we have been colonized by the Americans for some time. Or if it's because the educational system of the country is patterned after the American system. Or probably because English is one of the primary subjects that Filipinos are taught as early as their kindergarten years.

Well, in any case, you would probably thinking that it was the Americans who taught Filipinos the English language, eh.

Not.

Filipinos were introduced to the English language by British invaders, not Americans. The British who came to the country in 1762 were the first to teach Filipinos the English language. At present, the Philippines is the world's 3rd largest English-speaking nation, next to the USA and the UK.

Party with the Kids

As I've said in a previous entry, the real celebration for my birtday would only take place on Saturday and that's what happened yesterday.

At four in the afternoon, friends gathered at the Young Women's Christian Association to celebrate my birthday together with the children of the said institution for street kids. The birthday party also served as a victory party for the YWCA kids when we won second place in the cultural dance competition that we joined in September.

It was really good to see really good friends attend the party. Some of them were my college buddies, another group was Hunski's friends, our team mates for the dance competition were there also, and of course, adding a lot of fun to the party were the "girlfriends".

Good friend Carlo did me a favor and agreed to emcee for the party. (Thanks Carl! I owe you one...AGAIN! Hehe! Hugs!) He prepared games for the children and the adults that afternoon. I must say that my favorite was the jigsaw puzzle game. During this game, my friends had a chance to interact with the children because the former needed to help the latter. It's my favorite because I'm hoping that my friends would learn something from the short interaction with the kids.

Aside from the games, the children also performed a dance number (the boys did this) and a song number (the girls were the ones assigned to sing). The kids even entertained us more by performing another dance number to Kylie Minogue's song. I think all my friends had a great time watching the kids perform. I wasn't able to talk to everyone during the party because I was too busy bugging Carlo (Sorry Carl! You know I don't mean to bug you. I'm such an obsessive-compulsive person. Bop me anytime, bro! :D)

Moving on, the party wouldn't have been complete without gift giving and cake blowing. Hunski and I bought a chocolate fudge cake from Becky's Kitchen (YUM!!!!) and the celebrants - Me, friend Edsel, and the kids - John John, Charlene, and Jonny - blew the candles. Afterwards, the fourteen kids were given gifts by my friends. You see, instead of making friends bring gifts for me, I just told them to bring gifts for the children. And I'm just glad that everyone was supportive of the activity.

After the gift giving and the birthday cake blowing, the whole group had a light merienda of spaghetti, barbecue and roll prepared by moi of course. Heh heh. Best friend Eden, my dad, my two brothers were kind enough to help me pack the food in containers. My mom was the one who bought the ingredients. It was really a fun experience.

The only upsetting thing that happened that afternoon was that I lost my box of giveaways. Murphy's Law was working and I just got upset. The giveaways were beautiful roses made from dried leaves that I got when I went on a trip to Quirino last month. My mom helped me put a gold ribbon on each flower and my brother was kind enough to help me attach the thank you notes to each flower. Sigh. I really felt bad that the box disappeared all of a sudden.

After the party, the whole gang headed to Ebisu, a Japanese restaurant, in Makati for dinner. Some of us then drove to Malate for some drinks. A little after midnight, we all parted ways to go home. Surprisingly, there were a lot of people lining up to get into Bed last night. And more surprising was that my buddies weren't in the mood to go to the club (although I think Jofer wanted to go to Bed).

Uhm, to sum things up, Saturday turned out to be really great for me. It was definitely an extra special birthday. I'd like to thank everyone - Hunski, Carl, Francis, Zeki, Charms, Erik, Eden, Wes, Omar, Hunski's Mom, Ross, Luville, Joel, Edsel, Roy, Suki, Richard, Joseph, Richmond, Jofer, Ate Tess, Jeng, Abi and Chari - for making my big 24 a really big one.

Love you people!!!

This Week’s Friday Five:

1. How long have you had a weblog?
My weblog has been around for about five months now. My friend Carlo had one and after asking him stuff about blogging, I immediately signed up for Blogger and thus, my addiction to blogging started. Had I known about blogs since my college days, I’m sure I would have started back then.

2. What was your first post about?
My first post was about writing a first post for a blog. At that time, I was thinking that the first post is one base that will determine whether people would find your blog interesting, making them visit your blog frequently.

3. How many changes (name, location, etc.) of your weblog have there been, if more than one?
As I found out more about blogging and what one can do with his/her blog, I immediately included add-ons to my blog. The sidebar now has links to other people’s blogs, websites I often visit, a link to some pictures, as well as current stuff I read and listen to, among other things. Oooh, I also included a tagboard and a comments feature which I think is just so great!!! Thank you Tagboard.com and Haloscan.com.

4. What CMS (content management system) do you use?
Blogger. I am not really sure how to get my own site hosting.

5. Do you read people who have both a journal and a weblog? Or do you prefer to read people who have all of their writing in one central place?
At first, I couldn't tell the difference between a weblog and a journal. I thought it’s just the same thing. Thanks to this article, now I know. I think that what I have is a cross between a journal and a weblog. Anyway, to answer the question. Doesn't really matter whether it’s a journal or a weblog. As long as I find it interesting and worth reading, then you can be sure I would spend sometime reading your site.

Birthday Boy Reports

I woke up early yesterday. About four in the morning. (Yes, it’s so early!) I guess I was excited or maybe I just wanted to finish cooking early. It has been a tradition at my office that during every birthday, the celebrant prepares lunch for everyone. This is my third year of preparing lunch for them. In the past two birthdays, I have impressed my officemates by my culinary skills (or if you could call it skills. Har har!) and I intend to continue wowing them this year. On my menu was Nachos (read: Doritos) with Tomatoes, Onions and Chili Ground Beef, Chicken Cordon Bleu, and Linguine with Tomato, Beef and Mushroom Sauce. Dessert was good, old refrigerated cake prepared by my co-worker's mom.

Without wasting any more time and with the guidance of my favorite Inday Genius cookbook, I began slicing cheese and ham, inserting the two thing inside the breast fillet. Next was rolling the fillet in flour, then beaten eggs and finally, breadcrumbs. My mom helped me in deep frying the fillets. Gawd! I had no idea it took the chicken fillet so long to cook. I was only preparing about fifteen pieces and it almost took me more than an hour and a half.

Anyway, while the Cordon Bleu was frying, I proceeded to chopping garlic, onions and bell pepper. I lighted another burner and put a big pan over the blue flame. I began cooking spaghetti sauce, as well as, the ground beef for the nachos.

By the time my mom and I were finished, it was almost seven in the morning. I rested for a little while before getting ready for the office. I read the birthday messages of friends sent via SMS to my mobile.

At the office, things were quite the usual. The only thing special for me was the lunch we had. As I expected, the people enjoyed what I prepared. Those who enjoy cooking would agree with me in saying that it is such a good feeling to see people actually eating heartily, clearly enjoying what you prepared. Oh, and I should also thank the people who were thoughtful enough to send me birthday greetings throughout the day.

In the evening, I met up with Hunski. Before having dinner, Hunski and I went to Mass. It has been my custom to attend Mass every year during my birthday. You can attribute this practice to the years and years of Catholic education. Anyway, the Mass was a good experience for me. Hunski and I had dinner at the Big Buddha in Greenbelt III where we had fantastic Chinese cuisine. We could have gone to a more romantic restau but I was already very happy with our choice. Besides, I was still stuffed from lunch.

From the mall, we went back to the apartment where I got more surprises. Hunski made a cake for me. I even got to blow my birthday candles after Hunski's rendition of Happy Birthday. And as if that wasn’t enough, Hunski gave me a number of presents that I just loved. Awww! I know. It’s the sweetest gesture, isn't it? Hah! Can't beat that. Heh heh! I just have to say that I was having butterflies in my stomach the whole time, or as Carrie would have written it, the zsa zsa zsu.

Oh well, that’s how my birthday went. Birthdays haven't really been a big thing for me. But things have changed now. Birthdays used to be just another occasion for me but now, I guess I have different outlook at this occasion. For this reason, I planned something different for my birthday this year. Yup, just when you thought the celebration’s over, it is just about to happen. This Saturday. So watch out.

In the meantime, I'd like to thank everyone who greeted me on this meaningful occasion, especially my blog friends from abroad - Patrick and Bruce. It means a lot to me and I really appreciate it.

It was indeed a happy birthday. 0:)

A Different Workout

My Sunday turned out to be more exciting than I expected it to be.

First and foremost, I was excited because Hunski's arriving back from his vacation. Gad! It felt so different sleeping by myself last Saturday night. I just sleep so much better when I can feel Hunski right beside me. The other reason for my overly thrilling Sunday happened some time during lunchtime after I had lunch with my Mom.

An hour or two before I met up with my Mom and having nothing to do at the apartment, I decided to get into a pair of shorts, a white shirt, and my running shoes and headed out to the nearby park to do some walking, and a little bit of jogging. It was my only workout for the entire week.

The walking workout continued after I met with my Mom but this time, our workout was something most straight men and a very minute population of gay men would never understand - shopping. The only downside of this exercise is that someone's credit card also got a workout. Whew!!! By the time my Mom and I left the mall, my two hands were already holding on to carrier bags. The purchases included a simple yet chic shirt from Missoni Sport (I am just crazy about Missoni right now!!! But this doesn't mean that I'm actually buying stuff from the grand Italian fashion house, okay, so you can please not raise those eyebrows), a divine white sports bag from Adidas and a navy blue shirt that has SWIPE printed in front of the shirt. You need not ask why I bought the Swipe shirt. Go figure.

Sigh. When I got home, I was just excited to examine my new babies. Shopping is actually therapeutic. And again, before you react, think this. Hey! It's the same thing when you go to a shrink. You still shell out a certain amount of cash! At least, when you shop, you get something more than just a small bottle of pills.

Moving on, I told Hunski about my purchases just yesterday morning, before he went to work and before I met up with my brother. I must say that I was pretty panicky to tell him about it. I felt like Becky Bloomwood who, after an unforgivable trip to Jimmy and Manolo, just stashes the stuff (read: skyrocketing priced shoes) inside the closet, scared to death that boyfriend Luke might find them.

But I told Hunski.

I think he was disappointed with me. He had this look on his face. Crazy as it may sound, I felt like I betrayed him. But he was more understanding now, when it comes to my fascination for shopping. I can see that he's trying to be though I don't think he still understands the beauty of a Missoni shirt since he kept on confusing it with sports label Mizuno. But that's totally, completely, 100% okay. I'm just glad I didn't get any spanking (and not in the kinky sort of way) or a grand homily. He was just thoughtful enough to share his opinion and I value his opinion. I know he's got a very good point and I am not that stubborn not to listen to him.

But for now, allow me to indulge myself in sheer ecstasy over my latest shopping fling.

Of Volleybelles and a Three Man Pep Squad

Saturday.

While a majority of the population in the metro got ready for a monumental even in Philippine history - the eight hour visit of US President George Bush -, I prepared myself for something that was just as monumental in my own world – the championship game of the high school volleyball team my friend Suki was coaching. It was the first time that Suki will join the championship game as head coach of the team. The game was in the afternoon so in the morning, I busied myself by making red and white pompoms for me and the other boys who are also watching. I was already looking forward to an afternoon of bellowing and hip-hip-hurrah.

At noon time, Suki and his sister, Regina, picked me up from the apartment and we motored to Brent International School in Laguna. Richard and Joseph got up late so we just met at Brent.

We arrived at Brent a little after one p.m. The games were already starting. Suki and Regina led the way to the gymnasium to meet the girls. When we entered the huge gym, there they were. About twelve or so girls of Assumption College were sitting on the bleachers, very much relaxed. A lot of them had earphones on their ears, clutching their Discmans. Some were just chatting with each other, at the same time watching the ongoing game. Clad in black sports shorts and a red jersey, the girls seemed to be unperturbed that they were about to face their opponents in an hour or two. Sigh. The girls really are in high school.

An hour before the game, Suki, along with Abi, Anna and Regina, led the team out of the gym for a warmup. Outside the gym, I saw Joseph and Richard. As the three of us watched the girls get ready for the game, I brought out my props for the game and showed it to Joseph and Richard. The team giggled when they saw the read and white pompoms. I'd like to think that they were moved by it.

In no time, the whole team went back into the gym and got ready to take on their opponent - OB Montessori.

Even before the first ball was served, the crowd was already cheering and hollering their support to both teams. Joseph, Richard and I took a side seat and although there were just a handful of us in that area, we beat the cheers of the crowd.

Armed with our pompoms, we yelled at the top of our voices, "GOOOO AC!!!!, NICE SERVE!!!, SPIKE!!!, NICE ONE, GIRL!!!! WOO WOO WOO!!!". Man, I can't remember the last time I yelled like that. Sometimes, members of the crowd and the volleybelles would throw a look at our spot and smile. They were probably thinking how crazy these three men were.

Four sets later, a million serves done, and a very exhausted throat, the AC girls won the game. The moment the last score was made by the team, the crowd - parents, siblings, friends - stood from their seats, jumped and ran to the court to congratulate the team and coaches. Joseph, Richard and I, together with Chari and Alvin(who both arrived at the second set I think) also met the team and Suki to congratulate them.

What followed next was picture taking that lasted for I dunno how long. The girls just love posing for the camera. High school girls will be high school girls, I guess.

In the evening, all of us met at Friday's Makati for a sumptuous dinner-cum-celebration. Richie, Suki's partner who just came from work, met up with us.

On one of the television sets at Friday's, we were partly watching the coverage of Bush's visit to Manila. It was almost time for him to leave the country to go to Thailand. Video coverage of Bush and his wife boarding Air Force One was being shown. It reminded me of Harrison Ford and the movie.

As Bush left the country, so did the group leave Friday's. It was an early night for all of us, which was very unusual for a Saturday night. Suki and Richie went home. Joseph hitched a ride with Richard to I dunno where. I walked back to the apartment and found myself in bed by ten thirty, letting Will and Grace put me to sleep.

What a fun afternoon and evening!!! Tiring but fun.

CONGRATULATIONS SUKI AND AC GIRLS!!!

Yaiks! We don't have a medicine cabinet.

Alone for the Weekend

Hunski's Here Right Now

I don't have work today.

Today is my second free personal day. Although I should be extremely happy that I have a free day, I'm not so thrilled. I'm going to spend the weekend without Hunski.

We woke up at a very ungodly hour of five a.m. this morning. Hunski was going to Cebu, to Bantayan Island to be specific, together with his officemates for a much deserved vacation. For the sake of my reader friends who are not familiar with the Philippines, Cebu is a province south of Manila. It is located in the Visayas region. Our friend, Darwin, was telling us last night that Bantayan Island is one of the most pristine beaches in the country. So a little after five, Hunski and I went to the Manila Domestic Airport where he would meet his officemates.

I, on the other hand, went back to the apartment and while watching a taped episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, prepared my agenda for the day. Here's what appeared on my list of things to do for the weekend - go to the bank to pay off credit card bill, go to another bank to get replacement ATM card for my lost ATM card (yes, a month has already passed before I was able to take care of this), go to the National Bureau of Investigation to get a police clearance, go to the dentist to for a second opinion whether I need to have a dental surgery, go to the flea market to look for giveaways for my party and to look for shirts that I will use for a business, bring my clothes, Hunski's clothes and sheets to the laundry, meet with my Mom to discuss possible business opportunity.

Wow! I didn't realize that I have a lot of things to do. Seems like I would be busy myself during the weekend.

Right now, I'm here at the office. (Crazy, huh? Yes, you can whack me. Why the heck am I here? I'm supposed to be on my personal day.) Well, I got bored and my scheduled errands for the day have been accomplished so I'm here at the office to help out in the exhibit board that we are making. Next week is the University Foundation week. We were only informed of the exhibit yesterday! Can you believe that???!!! Good thing we have materials on hand for the exhibit.

I'm going to my folks tonight and return to the apartment tomorrow. Also, tomorrow I'm watching the volleyball championship game of Suki. It'll be at Brent International School in Laguna (province just outside Manila). It's Suki's first time as a head coach so we're all excited for him. Woo woo woo!!! Good luck Suki!!!

It looks like that my hands will be full in spite of the long weekend, huh? That's good. At least, I would be preoccupied. The next thing I know, Hunski is back here in Manila. Yay!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Bad Food

Augh!!!

I just had an unpleasant lunch.

I dunno if it was because the food looked unappetizing, it was tasteless or both.

I'm feeling nauseous right now. Ack!

Out on a Wednesday Night

I went out last night with the gang to attend the soft opening of a bar/restaurant our friend is managing.

Lucky me, my place of work is just a stone throw away from the party area of Manila so I didn't have a hard time going to the bar. It was a good ten minute walk from my office.

Hunski (who was looking really cute in his long sleeveed somewhat retro print blue polo, tjuzed of course) and me, along with Jofer, were the first to arrive. (What's new? We're always first to arrive and first to leave. Honestly, we'll be getting the World's Most Prompt Couple Award this year.) As we entered the bar, it was already full of people. Later on, more and more people arrived. The Doctors (Joseph and Mon) came in a couple of minutes after we arrived, garbed in very Sporty Spice attire, then came Nick who was in a just-got-out-of-the-office long-sleeved polo and slacks, followed by the ever sweet couple Richie and Suki.

Suki was looking very nice in a basic white stretch shirt. Well, Suki won't be Suki if he didn't look nice. Regina, Suki's sister, also came. I think the sleeveless somewhat turtleneck brown top matched with form fitting jeans really worked for her. She was so cute. And need I mention the cute little bag she carried to complete her look. Awww! I should tell her how cute she is one of these days.

Also present during the night were Hannah and Tina. The two lovely ladies, who looked prettier than the last time I saw them, are from my University and they took up the same course as I did. Hannah and Tina were three years ahead of me though. Their batch was a very impressive one. A batch that I've always admired. They were really smart and very much active with the course organization. My big question is, "are they a couple?" Haha!!! I think I saw them held hands. Oops! I have no plans of starting any furphy.

The ladies of the group also arrived. Jeng, Ate Tess and Weng (finally the two of us meet). All three women were hot, hot, hot that night. Frances, Richie's friend from high school, also came. Frances is one girl who I think is cute also. She was very feminine last night in her black top coupled with a skirt that has embroidered black flowers on it. Awww!

The party went on til I dunno what time. I left early since I had an early start today. But by the time I left, the bar was already packed with people - gay and straight, men and women, young and old. Everyone was beautiful. The people seemed to be having a good time chatting and dancing despite the blaring music. The food was good also, not to mention very cheap. And by the way, I thought that...

Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! I should stop this now. What is happening to me? I don't write like this. I'm beginning to sound like Lauren Ezersky or Maurice Arcache, or worse, a column writer for some cheap gossip mag. Eeeeewwwww!!!

Moving on.

Congratulations and wishing your business goes well, Richard!

Friendster Fever

via Friendster.com

I've been hearing about Friendster from the blogs of this guy and this guy. And I thought that Friendster was on it way out as those two guys were saying. But apparently in this country, the frenzy over Friendster has just begun.

These past few weeks, most of my friends have been talking about Friendster like it is the latest fashion craze. Ah yes, the Friendster fever is now here in the country. I think it was Suki who started it. I've already signed up for it before but didn't really care much about it.... until a couple of days ago.

Using the search function, I started randomly typing the names of people I know and to my surprise, profiles of people I have lost contact with appeared. Some of them were even friends from elementary school who I haven't seen and heard from for ages. Others are friends from college who, just like my elementary school friend, I haven't talked to for months or even years. I think it is just great that I get to communicate with them again.

But here's the most thrilling thing to happen to my Friendster so far, this hot lady is now in my Friends' list. Woo woo woo!!!

What can I say? I love her.

Three Night Outs, Tjuzing and a Bottle of Champagne

Transforming Straight Men the Fab 5 Way

Hey everyone! How's your weekend going? My weekend is about to end and I just have to say that I really had a good one. It was fantastic, except for the fever and headache last Friday. Went out a lot, learned how to zzzsshhh and had a romantic afternoon to cap the week. How about that?

Partying Three Nights in a Row

Thursday Night
This is the most unusual thing. If you knew me, you'd be really surprised that I went out three nights in a row. I must say that it was really good, although it was tiring. It started last Thursday. Our friend, Vince, is leaving for New York tomorrow night. He got a job in a cruise ship (no pun intended!) and he'll be gone for ten months! Oh man! We'll surely miss him but I'm sure Vince would not pass up on an opportunity like this.

Thus, we gave him a despedida party on a Thursday night!!! I dunno why it had a Thursday night. And apparently our other friends have no idea as well why it had to be a Thursday night. It was a very intimate despedida party. Began with some drinks at Komiks Restaurant and then moved on to Manila's-gay-club-of-the-moment, Bed.

Hunski and I left ahead of the entire group as always. One a.m. We love Vince but we also have work the following day. When we saw the rest of the group Saturday night, it turned out that a lot of them didn't go to work or were late at work last Friday. On the other hand, I had to deal with a terrible headache and stupid fever last Friday. But forget the fever, I told Hunski that I'd accompany him to bring out his friend who just arrived from the States and I wanted to keep my word.

Friday Night
So last Friday, I was back in Malate and this time, at the Republic of Malate. It was just me, Hunski and his friend, Omar. Our agenda for the night was to watch local theater actress Monique Wilson sing Gershwin, among others. It was a good show, I'd have to say. At least, the parts where I was awake. I had a nasty fever and I fell asleep during most parts of the show. One moment it was just the opening number, the next thing I know it's already about to end. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it.

After that the three of us headed to Cafe Breton where he indulged ourselves in heavenly crepes. Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... The two men I were with chatted away and I tried to contribute to the conversation. Although I felt better from the short sleeps I got, I was still feeling sick. Right after Cafe Breton, Hunski and I took Omar to Bed. Unfortunately, it wasn't as full as the previous night which I found to be actually weird. What was it about Friday? Or were we just too early? Hunski and I got home around two a.m. already. Hunski, being the thoughtful person that he is, drove Omar home before the two of us went back to the apartment.

Saturday Night
Okay. I think Hunski and I said in the morning that we were just going to stay home. But while we were watching televison in the afternoon, our friend Jeng rang Hunski and told us about a dinner for Vince. What is this? A second despedida party. Haha!!! Hunski and I went and it was much more fun than Thursday, at least for me. The dinner was held at Jeng's place. The food was simple but it was good. I think I ate so much. Yaiks!!!

Following dinner, the group headed to Malate again and we had a good get-together at Cafe Breton (again!!!). Boy, we love that place. The only difference about that night is that I told Hunski that our max staying time is twelve midnight tops. So when the group got ready to go to Bed (again!!! I know!!!), Hunski and I went ahead and bid night night to everyone.

Wooohhh!!! What fun those three night outs were!!!

Changing the World the Fab 5 Way

Aside from the three night outs, Hunski and I stayed home during daytime and watched episodes of the Fab 5 teach men how to tjuz, among many other things. Yup, we were watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy! Thank you, Omar!

Here's how the Fab 5 is described:

Five gay men, out to make over the world — one straight guy at a time.

They are the Fab Five: an elite team of gay men dedicated to extolling the simple virtues of style, taste and class. Each week their mission is to transform a style-deficient and culture-deprived straight man from drab to fab in each of their respective categories: fashion, food & wine, interior design, grooming and culture.

The show was just simply amazing and very revolutionary. Finally, here is a way to show the world that gay men aren't a plague to the planet, that gay people can actually and are actually doing something good for people.

I love how the five gay guys transform one straight guy from a mess to the best! And what I like about it is it's not just in the whole physical makeover but so much more. I just wish it could be aired here in the Philippines. Awww!!!

Of the five, I have to say my favorite is Carson. And not because he's the fashionista but because he has a great sense of humor and he is just tremendously hilarious.

Capping The Week

Today is the 12th. And it's the 16th month of me and Hunski being together. Woo woo woo!!! We didn't do anything extravagant today. We just went to the grocery, got some stuff, went back to the apartment.

We prepared the food and had a some sort of indoor picnic in his room - crackers, sausages, cheese, stuffed olives, dark chocolate and champagne to complete the menu. It was very special and very romantic. That's what I thought.

I'm back at my home now. Conserving my energy and psyching myself to face another week ahead. With the great days that I have been having, who wouldn't be ready to take on another work week!!!

Hope your weekend was just as great. Cheers everyone!

This Week's Friday Five

1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones?
I'm not really much of a sports person. Do I watch sports? Uhm, rarely. The only one that excites me to a certain point is the UAAP Basketball Season. The games get so intense especially when rival schools are up against each other.

2. What/who are your favorite sports teams and/or favorite athletes?
Hmm, pass. If ever I have any favorite atheletes, the reason I like them is not for their excellent skill in the sport but something more

3. Are there any sports you hate?
Basketball! Man, I hate the sport so much. Perhaps because I've had a million embarrassing moments playing the sport during my growing up years. Believe it or not, in this country, people can be so fanatic over the sport. And most of the time, knowledge of how to play the score (never mind if you're good or not) is used as an indicator whether one's straight or queer.

4. Have you ever been to a sports event?
Does the company sports event of Hunski count?

5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play?
The only sports I had were my Physical Education classes. When I was in grade IV, I was part of the volleyball intramurals team but I don't remember being sent into the court.

I can't wait to watch an episode of this show. A lot of people are saying that it's really fabulous. Too bad that the show isn't aired in this country. :(

Uhm, Prof. Angelo

While doing my work this afternoon, the phone rang and my co-worker called me. I asked her who it was and she told me it was one of the professors from the communications department.

I walk over to the phone and answered.

"Hi Angelo. We were wondering if you'd be interested to teach Speech Communications again this coming second semester. There will be two classes. One will be in Filipino and the other one is in English."

"Uhm, okay.", I replied.

I added, "But I have to take the 7-8.30 a.m. class so that it won't cause any conflict with my current job. I can move my working time to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m."

"Okay, then.", the professor replied.

"Is this for sure already?", I asked.

"Yes. It is. So I guess you have to speak to your Director now so that you can fix your schedule.", she replied.

"Okay. Thanks. Bye."

After I put down the phone, a strange feeling of excitement began to arise. I walked back to my computer, opened my Teaching Stuff folder and checked out what files I have.

I felt excited again. And at the same time, nervous. I only have one semester of teaching experience. I hope I will be ready to teach again. Anyway, I already have some ideas brewing inside my head. Any teaching tips and/or techniques from you people are very much welcome.

Now, I just have to convince my Director to let me get a teaching load.

Hmm...this is definitely something to look forward to.

Rants, Rants and More Rants

Warning: The following paragraphs will contain mostly ranting about the Monday morning affair. Some of the things might be offensive to some people but know that I tried to make this entry really non-toxic.

So I went to this company, whose name I choose not to mention, to take an exam and have a short interview last Monday.

The lady who called me informing about the exam and interview told me that the exam will be at 9:30 in the morning. Being the early bird awardee that I am, I left an hour and a half before the exam time, just to be sure that I won't be late and that I have more time to relax. I reach the office at nine a.m.

When I entered the reception area of the office, I went straight to the lady behind the desk and asked about the exam. She told me to sign my name on a sheet paper and take my seat. As I took my sit, it was only then that I saw my fellow applicants. And the next thing, I don't know if I should feel awkward. I was clad in usual formal attire - long sleeves, slacks, leather shoes, necktie - with my brown leather bag that I usually bring with me when I visit the corporate world. But the men and women with me were in really casual attire. And we're talking about polo shirts and sleeveless blouses here. Some were even in jeans and in rubber shoes. Thank God there were two more guys who were in the same attire that I am, and there were two middle-aged women who were dressed for the interview.

Since when did job applicants wear casual attire during job interviews? Or did someone just forget to tell me that the new job interview attire is just casual wear?

And the exam hasn't even started.

The exam, which originally was scheduled at 9:30, took place at 10:15 or so. As we were led into the exam room, I already saw the exam and I knew I wasn't going to have a good time. It was the usual IQ test. Six pages, eighty questions, forty minutes. I couldn't wait to get it over with. Forgive me but I guess I've taken too many IQ exams which is why every time, I would have to take a new one, I just want to jump out of the window (well, not exactly, just get out of the office would be enough).

I took the exam, finished answering the test, waited for the rest of the group to finish their test, and then proceeded again to the reception area. We had to wait for our names to be called for a short interview.

Minutes passed. It was almost lunch time. I could feel my stomach grumbling. Yes, I was starting to get hungry in spite of the big breakfast. I have finished reading a chapter of the book I brought with me when I was called. Hurray!!!

The "recruiting specialist" led me to a room for the interview. The room was a small one, used for functions I guess, and the wall was made of glass, thus you see the people walking outside and vice-versa. The interview began.

The "recruiting specialist" began, "What's your background? Do you have any problems with this kind of working hours? Do you have any problems with overtime? Would you prefer to be assigned here or in the Makati office? Do you have any questions?"

I reply, "As a matter of fact I do. Please tell me about the career path of a person working with this company. How long does it take to move from one level to another? What do you do to protect the...?"

I didn't get to finish the sentence. The "recruiting specialist" started laughing. First it was just a giggle and then, she really started laughing. Before I could ask her what was wrong, she said, "I'm sorry, Angelo. My officemates are distracting me. They keep on making me laugh."

Apparently, her officemates were outside teasing her. When I turned around to look at them, they were starting to walk away.

I calmly told the "recruiting specialist", "Maybe we should exchange places." Had I been really rude, I would have stormed out of that room and complain with the recruiting department about their "recruiting specialist".

We proceeded with the interview.

I ask, "With my current job, I do a lot of writing and layout work for the newsletter, annual report, and the like. Would there be any venue for me to do that should I work with the company? Do you have newsletters or any other publications?"

The "recruiting specialist" replied, "We have a songwriting contest this Christmas. You can join that. And then, we also have Christmas parties."

I almost had a heart attack. I had to keep myself from saying out loud, "Duh!!! Are we on the same planet??? Earth to Recruiting Specialist! Earth to Recruiting Specialist!"

Alas! I decided to keep my mouth shut so that I could get out of that room. I was back at the reception area. And this time, it was really crowded with job applicants. It was past one. My stomach was really aching. I just waited for the exam results, telling me that they'll call me again for another interview, before I got out of that office quickly.

No doubt, the highlights of that morning were a good luck text message from Hunski, a phonecall from one of my best friends, Eden, and having a view of the Ortigas area from the 20th floor.

When I was telling the whole thing to Eden yesterday, she told me, "See, Angelo. I told you. You wouldn't like it. But no, you wouldn't listen to me. You really wanted to go and frustrate yourself, huh."

"Oh well, Eden. It's not yet over. This is just the application process. Who knows? If I'm lucky enough to get the job, maybe I might just like the job even for a short time."

We'll see, boys and girls...

Pinoy Trivia of the Week:

The UP Oblation

As most of you know, I earned my bachelor's degree from the University of the Philippines. I took up Organizational Communication and finished just some years ago.

Here's a little trivia about my University. While a lot of Filipinos know that the University was established in 1908, I think it will be quite a surprise to many people to know that the first college of the University was actually established a year earlier.

The College of Medicine was established in 1907. The college which has been prominent for producing the best physicians in the country for the past ninety-five years was actually the first college to be established.

Nice Start for the Week

I didn't go to work yesterday.

Remember how I've been working really late (to the point of staying at the office the whole night and having sixteen, sometimes twenty, working hours) a couple of weeks ago in preparation for the anniversary. Well, now that the anniversary is over, the whole staff gets two have a one-day-off-per-week for four weeks. Yesterday was the first of four free days.

I still woke up early though. I had to. I had a scheduled exam with a company that might be my next employer. The exam was at 9:30 in the morning. So I got up around 6:30. Hunski was still fast asleep beside me. I was contemplating whether I should just go get breakfast along the way or cook breakfast. I stood up, and went to the kitchen. Looked into the cupboard to see what I could make for breakfast.

Ended up frying eggs sunny side up , cooked tuna chunks in butter, opened and heated a can of pork and beans, reheated the roasted chicken from dinner, and toasted slices of wheat bread. At the same time, I was setting the table, bringing out plates, utensils and glasses. I tried so hard not to make so much noise since I don't want to wake up Hunski and his flatmate, Jigs.

After the table was set, I went back to the room and tried to wake up very sleepy man. We both shared a good, heavy breakfast afterwhich, I brought some of the plates to the kitchen and started washing some of the dishes. Hunski washed the others.

I then went back to our room and stepped into the shower. Then, I sprayed on some body spray, got into my clothes - blue, wrinkle-free, long sleeved polo, brown pants, squared toed shoes, and a necktie which Hunski tied especially for me. To complete the preparations, I sprayed on some Higher Dior, got a quick hug and a good luck kiss from Hunski and I was ready to go.

As I got into the cab, I wonder. How many couples, gay and straight, start a week like this?

I dunno the answer but I sure hope a lot. I could get used to this setup.

Tell you about the exam and the interview later.

This Week's Friday Five:

1. Are you going to school this year?
I wanted to but plans have changed.

2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?
I earned my degree from the University of the Philippines Manila in April 2000. After that, I took up some non-degree courses in UP Diliman. Started on my Master's degree. Got bored. Applied at Purdue University in Indiana and University of Pennsylvania - Annenberg School for Communication. Didn't get in into both schools. Hu hu hu.

3. What are/were your favorite school subjects?
I have always liked communication subjects - subjects where we did a lot of presentations, wrote papers, worked as a team.

4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects?
Anything that has got to do with Math or numbers. Math has always been my waterloo.

5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?
My favorite teacher was and still is Dr. Angela Sarile. She was the one who established the degree program I took in this country. She is just so amazing.

The End of QLC is Drawing Near

There's something I have not been telling you guys, or the people who should know what's going on inside my head.

I am thinking of resigning from my current job.

Sounds trivial, huh? It's not. For the past three years, I have been working - living, is the right word, (a professor once said that when you love your job, it's called life) - as a full-time volunteer. As a program coordinator of a volunteer program, I have had the opportunity to learn things that four years of University education never taught me.

To know what is really happening outside the comforts of my world and see that there is a need to be involved. To realize that there is a need to volunteer. To see that I can make a difference in another person's life.

The past three years gave me experiences that the corporate world (where I initially wanted to be)would probably not have permitted to experience - to reach the remote villages in the mountains of Benguet, to converse with the Mangyan tribal leaders of Occidental Mindoro, to watch the majestic sun rise from the top of a mountain, to trek the rich forests of Mindoro, to harvest rice under the scorching heat of the sun, to teach traditional Filipino dance to street children, among many more experiences. To witness life at its simplest and at its best.

Six words. Best three years of my life.

I grew up, literally and metaphorically. But I am starting to feel restless.

Besides work, there have been several other notable things that have happened in the past three years. These circumstances are among the reasons why I want to move on to a new career.

However, I'm not sure where to go right now. I let a great opportunity slip two months ago because of the anniversary where I had tremendous amount of task that I can't just leave behind. That's okay. I thought of what possible areas I could go into when I resign. I already have a few. These are all temporary solutions. And all the options that I have are completely far off from the current field that I am in, and that I love.

But again, it's okay.

I now know that the past three years have been preparing me for the real world. Call it pre-life orientation, if there is such a thing. And I know that no matter where I go, or what field I go into, I would still be a volunteer and I would probably even initiate volunteer activities, hoping to spread the spirit of voluntarism. Once a Pahinungd, always a Pahinungd. That's what we always say. (Pahinungd is from the Cebuano dialect which means oblation - the offering of oneself for a higher cause)

So I think my only dilemma here is to choose from the options that I have right now. What's only making it difficult is that there are only two options. I guess I just have to choose, eh. I wouldn't know what happens next unless I make a choice. Am I scared? A bit. But I'm ready. No regrets whatever choice I pick. I believe in what Jon Larson said, No Day But Today.

I think it is safe to say that the end to my QLC is drawing near...

How Do You Use Your Brain?

I took this Brain Usage profiler.

Here are the results.

Your Brain Usage Profile
Auditory : 64%
Visual : 35%
Left : 29%
Right : 70%

Angelo, you show a slight right-hemisphere dominance with a moderate preference for auditory processing, an unusual and somewhat paradoxical combination of characteristics.

You are drawn to a random and sometimes nonchalant synthesis of material. You learn as it seems important to a specific situation, and might even develop a resentment of others who attempt to direct your learning down a specific channel.

Your right-hemispheric dominance provides a structure that is only loosely organized and one which processes entire swatches of reality, overlooking details. You are emotional in your reactions and perceptual more than logical in your approach, although you can impose structure and a language base when necessary.

Your auditory preference, on the other hand, implies that you process information sequentially and unidimensionally. This combination of right-brain and auditory modes creates conflict, as you want to process data more rapidly than your natural processes allow.

Your tendency to be creative and free-flowing is accompanied by sufficient ability to organize and be logical, allowing you a reasonable degree of success in a number of different endeavors. You take in information methodically and systematically which can then be synthesized rapidly. In this manner, you manage to function consistently well, although certainly less efficiently than you desire.

You prefer the abstract and are a theoretician at heart while retaining the ability to be practical. You find the symbolism in a great deal of what you encounter and are something of a "mystic."

With regards to your lifestyle, you have the mentality which would be good as a philosopher, writer, journalist, or instructor, or possibly as a systems designer or social worker. Perhaps most important is your ability to "listen to your inner voice" as a mode of skipping over unnecessary steps to achieve your goals.

And You Thought You Knew Me

This whole blog thing has served as a venue for people, particularly friends, to get to know the blog owner more. The topics that I have written, if I remember correctly, included trivia about this country I am living in and its people, the trips that I have taken, my unconventional work, reviews about some stuff, nonsensical talk, and my fascination for fashion and handbags.

And apparently, from the list above, what is really becoming a big surprise to my friends is not the fact that I'm queer (Whew! That wasn't to hard to say now, was it?) but rather, the fondness that I have for bags (I refuse to call it addiction, obsession, or anything that is really close to those two words).

A couple of friends have been telling me that they never knew that I was into bags. It came to them as some unexpected sort of revelation. And I am just amused because there have been mixed reactions to this new thing that they found out about me.

One good friend was saying, "I never knew you had this thing for bags. I just can't make a mental picture of you having a fascination for bags."

Another one was saying, "You know what? I got you a Zegna bag (really now!!!) but I didn't give it to you because I thought you wouldn't like it."

Now you know.

Anyway, I think it's time for me to sing the Carpenters' "You've got to love me for what I am... for simply being me..."
