Something I Can Do Forever...
These past few weeks, I've been spending my Saturday afternoons at my old office. Right after my class is dismissed at twelve noon in Quezon City, I travel all the way to the south to get to UP Manila.
The reason - I've been volunteering in the Program for Street Children of my old office, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod. In case you forgot, Pahinungod is the volunteer program of the University. (Pahinungod is the direct translation of oblation.)
The Program for Street Children is staging a musical about the lives of streetchildren. We have about twenty or so children from the various street kids institutions in Manila participating in the play. The kids have been working so hard for the play, although sometimes, they're also making it hard for the people who train them. Hehe!
I sort of got myself into the activity more than I expected. Hehe! But it's all good. I'm so addicted to volunteering that I could probably do it for the rest of my life.
The play/musical will be staged come this February. We're still finalizing the date and venue but I do hope you can come and watch it, guys.
Remember, you can make a difference.

Humans... Like Us!
A Med Frat and A Med Class
Medrhythmics and Agape Capture the Audience
People have this preconceived notion that students in the medical field, more especially those who are already practicing the health professions, are stiff and very serious. Most of the time, people think that studying to be a doctor entails spending hours and hours of time buried in thick books on physiology, pharmacology, parasitology and all other "logies".
But the UP Manila College of Medicine disprove all these notions once a year in an event that is appropriately entitled, Tao Rin Pala.
Tao Rin Pala (Humans As Well), more popularly known as TRP, is an annual event of the College of Medicine where the students and faculty of the College of Medicine, and doctors of the UP-Philippine General Hospital, take off their stethoscopes and scrub suits and replace them with mic stands and colorful costumes. In short, Tao Rin Pala is the night when the College of Medicine constituents unleash their other talents besides healing (or at least, try to) people.
The highlight of the night is a choral competition where the different year levels of Med students perform a piece that they themselves originally composed. This year, the competing classes were Classes 2007, 2008 and 2009. The theme for the choral competition was related to the centenial year of the College of Medicine come 2005.
The theme of the TRP, however, is Latino Night. So the performances of the different student organizations and classes made the audience dance and move to the Latin beat. The best performances for me were the dance presentations of the Mu Sigma Phi and Phi Kappa Mu Fraternities and Sororities and the interpretative presentation of Agape (a Christian student organization). The most daring though was the dance presentation of the doctors from the Department of Surgery. The doctors literally stripped until they were totally naked, with only a black banner with a printed "Anything for Surgery" as their cover.
The entire event was really great. This was the best TRP I have watched so far. It was just so organized and all the performances were really, really great. Congratulations to all the organizers and participants!
And at the end of the night, I'm sure every guest who watched the event had one comment about the UP College of Medicine people.

Which Tea Are You?
Green Tea...
You are Green Tea!
Strong and very smart you prefer peace to violence and very rarely take action if it involves confrontation. But you make up for this with your keen insight and understanding of the world and people around you, you have a very mysterious nature.
Many people see you as laidback and that may be true but you are very intelligent and make good decisions.
What type of Tea are you? {-With Anime Pictures!-}
brought to you by Quizilla
I love green tea! Be it the frappuccino at Starbucks or the cool ice cream at Haagen Daz or just a plain cup of it, I love it.
I'm done. Your turn.

Will, Oh, Will
Will Opening and Closing the Gucci Fall 2004 Show
Remember a couple of months ago when I posted the photo of a male model I like but whose name I dunno. Well, guess what? I already know what his name is. It's Will Chalker. And apparently, I'm not the only one who's captivated by this 24-year old model. Will is the first male model to be nominated for the Best Model title at the British Fashion Awards held in November 2 in London. Competing with him are Londoner Lily Cole and another favorite of mine, Russian Eugenia Volodina (who's the current face of Bulgari).
Anyway, going back to Will.
Before landing the ad campaigns for some of the biggest names such as YSL and Paul Smith, Will used to be a construction builder. (How come construction workers here in Manila don't look as good as Will Chalker? Hehehe!) Will has been modelling for the past nine seasons and he has graced the runways of some of the industry's biggest designers like John Galliano and Roberto Cavalli.
Will's moment of triumph came when he opened and closed the show of Tom Ford's last men's collection for Gucci early this year.
Gawd! I hope Will would bump into my blog one of these days. For more information about him, you can go here.

And We have a President...
Image via UPD
These past few months, one of the most talked about issues in the University is, who will replace incumbent UP president Francisco Nemenzo. Dr. Nemenzo is scheduled to retire on Feb. 9, 2005.
Of the ten nominees, the one who has gotten the broadest support from the University itself is current UP Diliman Chancellor Emerlinda Roman.
Last week, the 12-member Board of Regents failed to elect the next UP President when even after a fourth try, the balloting ended up with a 6-6 deadlock. The split was between UP Diliman Chancellor Roman, and Edgardo Espiritu, ambassador to the United Kingdom and former finance secretary. The latter was Malacañang's choice.
"There was really a strong intervention from Malacañang," student regent Marco Dominic delos Reyes said. Of the nominees, only Espiritu was the only one who did not attend any of the forums and dialogues held on the UP campuses.
But no matter what, the University fought and made sure that the one who will be appointed to the highest position of the University will be the best.
True enough, the deadlock was broken yesterday when Chancellor Roman won over Espiritu by a mere one vote.
Chancellor Roman will be the 19th president and the first woman president of the University of the Philippines. She has an Agriculure degree from UP Los Baños in 1972, a master's degree in agribusiness management from UP Diliman, and a doctorate in Business Administration also from UP Diliman. She has held severeal key positions in the University before becoming the chancellor of UP Diliman.
Chancellor Roman will also have the distinction of being UP's centennial president as the country's premier university celebrates its 100th foundation anniversary in 2008.
Congratulations Chancellor Roman!!!

So Shoot Me...
Lovers in Paris via Korean Film.org
Park Shin-Yang via Korean Films
I hardly watch television. And when I do, the television shows that I watch are very select.
But last week, I started watching this television show on one of the local networks. It's a soap opera but not a Filipino one. It's Korean, dubbed in Tagalog.
So shoot me.
I can't help it. My Mom was watching the show, and I was intrigued by the conversation I was hearing so I decided to check it out. Of course, the lead guy character was another reason that made me sit down and watch it with my Mom.
The next thing I know, there I was the following night watching it at Hunski's home while Hunski shook his head in disbelief. Haha!
The title of the show is Lovers in Paris. I've looked it up on the Internet and another title for it was Roman in Paris. Like other soap operas, the show revolves around the story of a poor girl and a rich guy whose lives meet each other thanks to playful fate. The poor girl, Vivian, (who doesn't look so poor I should say) is played by Kim Jung-eun. The Prince Charming, on the other hand, is Carlo played by Park Shin-yang. Aside from being a pretty face, the guy is doing a great job portarying the role of a stiff, serious General Manager for a multi-national corporation.
Learn more about the series here.
Lovers in Paris airs on Channel 2 every night at 9:30 p.m.

Wow Wow Wow!!!
The nicest thing just happened to me last night.
Yesterday afternoon was spent with Richie, Suki, Kate and GA. We were at Raymund Isaac's studio to do a product shot for the magazine. While Suki and GA worked on the products, Richie and I discussed the editorial.
Afterwards, we went to Suki's house to fetch her sister, Regina. From there, we went to the love nest of two friends where we spent the evening. Hunski, Alvin and GA met us there too.
If you have read my previous posts, you'd know that I've been so addicted to Wicked the Musical these past few weeks.
When we arrived at our friend's house, the soundtrack of the musical was blaring all over the place. Suki went in the room to turn it off because he had to watch volleyball and the news. The others were just resting before working on the magazine again while our other friends prepared dinner.
When dinner was ready, some went ahead and started on the delicious pasta. I waited for Hunski so we could eat together. When he arrived, Hunski, Richie and I ate dinner when we heard the music of Wicked play again.
Richie went into the bedroom to check it and he came back out to us, "Guess what? It's a copy of the musical and not just the soundtrack." Having said this, I literally ran to the room and was just so excited by what I saw on the television screen. It was really a taped copy of the musical.
For the next couple of hours, I was in heaven as I watched the musical. Never mind that it wasn't very clear. I was just so amazed by the music, the singing, the dancing and the set design. "My gawd! That was one helluva of a set design!", I thought.
When we finished the musical, I was just happy that I kept on thanking and thanking our friend. I have no idea how that copy reached my friend but I am just so thankful to whoever gave it.
That just made my whole week. Bless you whoever you are!

So Small yet So Painful...
When I was a kid, I would go to the dentist very often and let me tell you, each visit was a painful one. I keep on wondering how a tooth so small can cause pain and discomfort to my whole body. Because of this, I (and I'm sure several others) grew up afraid of the dentist. However, after going through dental surgery two years ago to have an impacted molar extracted, my threshold for pain went up a notch or two.
Yesterday night, after brushing my teeth, I examined them and decided that I needed to have them cleaned. And so, I called my dentist friend and set an appointment with her today. The whole night I was already psyching myself that this visit will be a little painful. In a way, this helped me prepare for the visit. Haha!
I showed up my friend's clinic before lunchtime. As I sat down on the dental chair, I told my friend, "You'd have a grand time cleaning my teeth!" I dunno but dentists probably get some thrill or challenge from scraping the plaque of a person's teeth. Haha! My friend began procedure and after a little groaning every now and then, the procedure was over.
My friend handed me a mirror and I looked at my pearly whites and I just couldn't help what a big difference there was. There was no more unwanted plaque. However, I noticed and my friend also noticed that my lower set of teeth have been moving apart from each other. And the gaps are so obvious. She said that I needed to get braces to close the gaps. Otherwise, I might end up losing all my teeth.
Yaiks!
I would probably get braces next year when my finances permit me. I just hope that by that time, all my teeth would still be intact. Hehe!

More Stuff to Look Forward to...
Image via Planet Ark
We had our fashion photo shoot for the magazine last Thursday. One of the models was Corey Wills, who I have to say is one of the nicest models I've met.
To the Filipino female (and gay community), Corey is recognizable for being the face of the Citibank credit card ads a couple of months ago. But perhaps, Corey's popularity was catapulted to great heights even more when he was chosen as one of the ten Cosmo Bachelors for the year.
But there's more to this hunk than just having a beautiful face and a body to-die-for.
Apparently, Corey, a vegetarian, is also an advocate of animal rights. About a month ago, Corey agreed to pose for the advertising campaign of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Along with PETA, Corey is promoting to Filipinos that a vegetarian diet is the best way to stay fit and fight animal abuse, among many others.
The ad was billed "Chicks Love a Vegetarian".
With Corey promoting the ad, I'm quite sure not only the chicks will love him.
Catch Corey in the Love Issue of Icon this January 2005.

This is Comm Res 280 and Media Studies 210
My classes already began.
In Comm Res 280, there's only four of us. The other two people were my classmates the previous semester and the third person is a Broadcast Communciation major. Our professor is Prof. Flori Mateo. She was my professor two years ago in my Comm Res 201 (Introduction to Communication Research) course. I enjoyed her Comm Res 201 class so I'm quite sure I will enjoy this 280 class as well.
Comm Res 280 is Research Design. When we met up last Tuesday, Prof. Mateo explained to us what the course was and told us to already think of a possible topic for our thesis. She said that it would be better if our term paper topic in her class would be our thesis topic so that at least, all the research work we'll do won't be put to waste when the semester ends.
To be honest, I'm quite excited about the thesis. I enjoyed writing my undergraduate thesis and I enjoyed doing my mini-thesis last semester. My problem right now is what topic to use. I have two possible major topics in my mind but they are so far apart from each other - first is gay and lesbian studies, and the other one is development communication.
If you have any possible topics for thesis in mind, please share them with me.
Media Studies 210, on the other hand, is Media Theory. We're seven people in this class so it's much more fun. Our professor is Prof. Betsy Enriquez. I've already worked with Prof. Betsy, if you remember, when I wrote the review of Q. Allan Brocka's film Eating Out the previous semester.
I found out about this course last semester and I said to myself that this was one course I would take as an elective. Thus, I enrolled in the course this semester. Our first meeting was more of an orientation to the course and an informal getting-to-know-each-other. It was fun. I really look forward to this class.
My third class is Comm Res 290. Course description is Management of Research. I still don't know who the professor is but I do hope it would be a class as good as these two.
Cheers.

Something to Look Forward to...
I had a very interesting interview last week with a prominent local personality. Normally, I would be really irritated if a person was late for about an hour and a half. Hey, I may not be a celebrity but don't waste my time! If we say two p.m., then you better be there at two p.m.
Good thing Richie and Frances were with me. And more thanks to Jerry Yan for having an event on that same day (Richie and Frances had to cancel their meeting with Bench and stayed with me.)
Going back to this personality, I don't really know much about this person. And the whatever information I know, they are not exactly positive. Haha! I had to do the interview only because there was no other person available to do it. We were informed that the interview already had to be the following day at about ten p.m. the previous night.
After what seemed forever, Richie, Frances and I saw the person. It was not hard to notice the person. I have to say that the person's appeal was really great. We said hi to the person and that person turned out to be one of the nicest and most real persons one could ever meet. I have to say this because the industry this person belongs to is full of fake people and it's hard to tell who's really your friend and who's pretending to be your friend.
Anyway, for about the next hour, the three of us interviewed this person and it was realy a very fun interview. The person was so accommodating and unpretentious, to think that the person was a celebrity. I thought that was really great.
And I think you would also like this personality, especially after you read the interview we had.
So you better look forward to the next issue of Icon Magazine...

Can't Wait For This...
As most of you already know, supermodel Gisele Bundchen will star in the movie Taxi.
When I heard the news ages ago, I just couldn't wait to see the movie. I've always adored Gisele Bundchen for reasons only a select few will understand. Haha!
I saw a trailer of the movie a couple of weeks ago. In the scene, Gisele and her gang of fellow Brazilian models (yes, models!) appear to have been caught by the police. Gisele was standing outside her car, her hands raised, and her loooong legs exposed by her mini-skirt.
One of the police officers ask her to drop to her knees on the ground, and she cooly replies, "In this skirt? No."
Haha!
"You go, girl.", I thought. And that just made me want to see the movie even more.
This week, the movie will hit the theaters here in Manila and I'll definitely be among the first to line up for the movie. I haven't read any reviews of the movie. And frankly, I don't really care.
Who cares if Jimmy Fallon or Queen Latifah don't do well? And who cares if Gisele's the bad gal in the movie? I don't
I just want my Gisele.

Some Random Thoughts...
As a result of turning 25, I just thought of making a life plan in a matter of five minutes...
I'm still doing my Master's degree now and I should be finished with it by the year 2007.
By that time, I will be 28.
When I'm done with my Master's, I want to be a UN volunteer. Yes, I really want to be a UN volunteer. I'd like to do this for about three years.
By that time, I will be 31.
When I get back here to Manila, I want to begin on my Doctorate degree. This is my ultimate plan in terms of my academic plans. I would probably finish in three years.
By that time, I will be 34.
I hope to be part of the academe and any international foundations.
Plans...plans...plans...
Of course, I dunno what is really intended for me. So I dunno. Let's just see what happens.

I Couldn't Be Happier...
Hi guys.
I'm here at the shopping center right now. It's lunch break so here I am surfing the Net. Later on, I'll be going to the Engineering building to pay my tuition fee so that I will finally be officially registered for the second semester.
I'm psyching myself as well for the loooong line of other students I'll join later at the Engineering building. Haha! Every semester, UP students go through one hell day, for others it maybe two or three, and that's called - registration.
Some people may find it absurd and even irritating, a clear sign of how the country's premiere state university needs improvement. But for UP students, this is part of the UP experience. At least, that's what I think.
Anyway, enough of that and time for some good news.
As I've mentioned last night, I'm a bit nervous to get my classcards because I'm not sure what grade I'll get. However, things turned out to be pretty well and I'm so damn proud.
Not intending to be a brag, but I got a 1.25 for my Quantitative Research and Communication and Socio-Cultural Change courses. And for Philosophy of Education, I got a flat 1.0. Whoooppppeeee!!!
Not bad, eh?

Registration Once More...
Ah, the semestral break went by without me noticing it. I've been kinda busy these past few weeks that I hardly enjoyed the semestral break. I didn't even get to go out of town for a day or two. It sucks.
Sigh.
Tomorrow, registration for the second semester begins. And tomorrow, I get to see how I did with the first semester. Yes, I'll be claiming my class cards tomorrow. I've been putting it off for the longest time for no exact reason and tomorrow, I will either jump for joy or jump off a building. Hehehe! Just kidding. I asked one of my classmates earlier whether she got her class cards already and if she got good grades. She told me that she got low grades so that sort of made me nervous. Anyway, I'm still keeping both my fingers crossed.
Moving on.
I'll be enrolling in three subjects once again. Since I'm still unemployed, I might as well make good use of the time that I have. And besides I only have a couple of years left to finish everything. Note to you, if you're taking up your graduate studies #1: never ever go on awol for two years. Haha! But I've got things planned out so there's no need to worry.
This semester, I wanted to take up another Education course but when I checked the online enlistment, all slots for the course I wanted have been filled up. Apparently, Education courses are very much in demand whether it's first or second semester. Haha! Note to you, if you're taking up your graduate studies #2: if you see that there are several available slots when you check the online enlistment, make sure you already reserve a slot.
So the subjects I'll take up this semester are two Communication Research Majors and Media Theory (for my elective). I'm quite excited and I'm really looking forward to going back to school.
What can I say? I'm really drawn to the academe.

Happy Halloween
The Pirate and The Cowboy
Saturday turned out to be longer than my Thursday affair.
I started my day at nine in the morning because I had to attend the training on dealing with street children that was conducted by Pahinungod. Although I'm already familiar with this training, I decided to attend the event to show support to the program.
After the training, I decided to stay on at the office to listen to the songs for the musical. The next thing I know, it's already five p.m. and I had to meet up with Hunski and our other friends.
I thought I would still have time to go home to change my clothes and take a bath. But one thing led to another and I just found myself heading to Malate in the evening to go to the Halloween party.
The party was okay. It wasn't that exciting for me. I guess you can say that from the fact that I didn't bother to dress up in costume and contented myself with a cowboy's hat. Haha!
Hunski, I and our friends chose to sit outside one of the bars and enjoy the sights and sounds. We enjoyed each other's company conversing about all sorts of things. Hahaha!
I got home at six in the morning. Yes, you read that right. Six in the morning.
So far, this was the latest that I have gone home from a party. I myself wonder how I managed to stay up and stay smiling that whole night. Oh well. It was fun. I'll post more pictures when I get it from Edsel and Richie.
Hope your Halloween was just as fun.
