Salvation Party at World Trade Center
Friday night was spent partying at the Salvation Masquerade Party of Circuit Asia.
Hunski and I didn't really feel like going, but we decided to go and see our friends. So by 11 p.m., Hunski and I headed to the World Trade Expo Center along Roxas Boulevard to attend the party.
When we got there, the party has already started and the venue was already filled with several people. There were several people who came in costumes (because a P10,000 cash prize goes to the one in Best Costume) and it was really nice. Hunski and I missed the awarding ceremonies but the winner was this horizontally challenged bald guy dressed in a black gown that I swear could have belonged to Queen Amidala...well, that is if Amidala was an evil queen and weighed about 200 pounds or more. The costume was fantastic while the guy was really in character (read: scary...Haha! I’m not being mean). He totally deserved the grand prize.
Meanwhile, Richie, Suki, Edsel, Rupert, Hunski and I were just in our usual party attire. Franco looked really cute in a Grand Prix jumpsuit. Edsel made up this mask which doubles as a gaydar or tiara. Richie and Suki brought some masks, while I on the other hand, according to Richie was actually in costume as a Stepford Wife...because of my pastel colored shirt, the khaki pants and the square toed shoes that I was in. Hahaha!
The performances for the night were great. Although I think, and many others I'm sure, that no one still beats the performance of Kevin Aviance at the first Circuit Asia party.
Still, the Salvation Party turned out to be a really nice one and the people behind it deserve a congratulations.

Check It Out...
Yes, yes. The anniversary issue of Icon is now out and should be in some newsstands already.
Are you seeing the contents of the new issue???
Rafe Totengco, Alec Mapa, Allan Brocka and Noel Alumit. Plus, we've got the usual great articles and fantastic fashion editorials!
Of course, we've invaded the privacy of Bench Body billboard hunk now Icon cover boy Rafael Rosell. See photos of this really, really nice guy in his most private moments and read the article where we Rafael shared his thoughts on growing up, being a Filipino actor, playing a gay role, among others.
Size queens would also surely notice something new about the magazine. Haha!
With all these new things we've got to offer, how can you not get a copy of this new issue? Hahaha!
Go on. Give in.

Next...
Someone in the coming issue of Icon said that his favorite word is next.
And it's quite expected of this person since he belongs to an industry where perhaps the most important thing is predicting what the next big thing is. (Find out who this person is in the next issue of Icon.)
To a certain extent, I feel that the same thing may be said about doing all this Icon work.
Once we've closed an issue, we immediately move on to the next issue. Because really, it is quite pointless to stay stuck on something that's done and over with. Sure, it's possible that there may be typos but there's really nothing more we can do about it. (Oh gawd! I hope there's none with this new issue. Otherwise, it'll drive Richie, Suki, Hunski and I crazy. Hahaha!)
Personally, when I get my hands on a new issue of Icon, I would either just quickly scan through the pages or I would keep the magazine along with my other copies of Icon and wait for a couple of days before I open my new issue.
Maybe because I've just become so familiar with the content of the magazine that I really need to take a break before I see it again. Or maybe because I'm scared that I might find some typo.
When I do open my copy and go through the pages of the issue, all I can say when I reach the last page is, "Oh well. That's that. Let's move on to the next one."
And that's exactly what Richie and I did yesterday. We started planning the next issue of Icon. I can't believe that we're starting with another issue again. Hahaha!
I guess one thing we can also say after finishing an issue of Icon is, "Here we go again." Hahaha! We all know that each issue entails hours, days, weeks and months of stress and all, but still, we do it. Hahaha!
We just hope people do appreciate the thing that we do.

Birthday Boy...
Alrightey, so I guess I should write about how this day went, huh?
No, no. Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not that I didn’t really enjoy it. It’s just that my original plans for this day didn’t push through, and I wish it did.
Originally, my plan was to leave for Marinduque to do volunteer work. Remember a couple of months ago I accompanied Jean to Marinduque to conduct a site visit and to meet with the people from the local Department of Education office for the Teachers’ Development Program? That program will be this week. I was supposed to go with Jean but I had to back out at the last minute because a project came up, and as much as I wish I could forego this project, I can’t.
So instead of being on a bus that would take me to the Dalahican Pier where we would take a ferry to Marinduque, I ended up at the mall entertaining myself. Before going to the mall, I attended Mass first just to say thanks to the Big Boss for giving me another year.
Around three in the afternoon, Hunski and I met up. We planned to go and visit the Ayala Museum, but instead we ended up buying gifts for other people (on my own birthday…Haha!). Hunski’s brother is getting married on Monday, and we spent about an hour or two at the home section of Rustan’s looking for a nice gift for the newlyweds-to-be. I didn’t think it would be that difficult to buy wedding presents but as it turns out, it is difficult.
After getting the wedding present, we had to look for a birthday gift for Hunski’s friend, Pearlynne, who we would be meeting in the evening. From the home section, we moved to the fragrances and body care section. Hunski was thinking of getting her something from Acca Kappa but it was way over his budget. So we left Rustan’s and went to The Body Shop to see if there is something better. Deciding that she might not really appreciate a nice body wash or body butter, we headed to Tower Records and got her two CDs instead.
By the time we finished buying gifts, it was already six in the evening and we already had to go to Malate to meet Pearlynne. After fetching Pearlynne and Omar at Robinson’s Place, we headed to Korean Village, a restaurant in Adriatico. Pearlynne is going through a “Korean” phase right now. Haha! She’s been into several Korean movies lately. And I think she’s also planning to visit Korea next year. I’m not sure if all this is to be blamed on Lovers in Paris. Hahaha!
Anyway, it was such a nice dinner. We had Korean beef stew, tofu barbecue, some spicy seafood soup, kani salad and of course, kimchi. The three of them also had a shot of Korean alcohol, soju. (Well, Pearlynne had more than just one shot…Haha!)
After dinner, we decided to walk around Malate just to check if there was anything new. We headed to Pride Exchange where I got a copy of The Wedding Banquet. There were other gay films also but I didn’t bring any money so I didn’t get to but the other films that I wanted.
From Pride Exchange, we decided to drive to Intramuros to check if there was some place where we can have dessert. But the only thing open at Intramuros was Starbucks. So instead, we just decided to go to Timog Ave. in Quezon City and ended in Icebergs. The four of us shared two servings of banana split.
After that, we decided to call it a night. (Pearlynne gave me a football pillow as a present and I thought that was really nice of her.)
So basically, that's how it went.
Thank you so much for everyone who remembered! You guys are the best!

Day Before the Big Day...
Today, we sent the Anniversary Issue of Icon magazine to the press. This means that by next week, it should be in the newsstands. So to the Icon fans here and abroad, just extend your patience a little bit more. Trust me. It’s worth the wait.
But today all Richie, Suki, Hunski and I did was to relax and treat ourselves. It’s sort of our post-prod, pre-prod celebration. (Post-prod for the issue we just closed and pre-prod for the next issue we will start working on next week. Haha!)
Hunski and I met up near his house, and we dropped by one of the Icon distributors to check if we already had a check. Sigh. The check still wasn’t available. What a waste of time. Anyway, from the distributor’s house, we drove to the nearby Power Plant mall at Rockwell. I wanted to see the newly opened Zara store.
And what a store it turned out to be. It was really impressive, and not to mention really, really spacious. Of course, the men’s clothes occupied only about a quarter of the entire space, while the women’s clothes occupied more than half. Whatever’s left is allotted for the children’s clothes.
Man, the store was huge! The pieces were also very nice, and reasonably priced. There were some pieces below a thousand. Think Marks & Spencer pricing but with much stylish and more creative designs.
However, I couldn’t help but wonder why Zara Philippines is carrying fall/winter pieces. And I really mean fall/winter clothes. We’re talking about wool coats, quilted bomber jackets, leather jackets with faux fur lining. Aren’t we in a tropical country? But to answer my own question, I guess the buyers of these pieces would be foreigners/expats temporarily staying in the country. I’m not sure if the pieces are priced slightly cheaper than the Zara stores abroad, but if they are, then I guess that’s one reason for them to rejoice.
Anyway, Hunski bought a fantastic bag. It’s a tote bag that transforms into a messenger bag. Not bag, actually. And another good thing about the bag is that there were only two pieces of that bag that was ordered, and the one we got was the last piece. Sorry guys.
In any case, check out the new Zara store.
From Zara in Rockwell, we went to Greenbelt to meet up with Richie and Suki. We had dinner at our usual place – Italianni’s. Hunski and I were both excited to show the bag to Richie and Suki because we’re sure they’d love the item. Richie, on the other hand, was so excited to let us listen to the new single of the ultimate gay icon, Madonna. After listening to the single, we’re more than sure that it’ll be such a hit again. It was a good dinner. It was a very relaxed atmosphere and we really didn’t have to worry about anything since we’re done with the issue. (Well, except the money for printing…haha!)
Joining us for dinner was Gerry Santos. (You can check this guy out in the Maximum Exposure issue of Icon. He’s one hot production designer.) Tito Gerry just got back from the US. He was there for a couple of months. Now that I’m writing this, I wonder how we survived all those photo shoots without him. Haha! Anyway, Tito Gerry is one reason for Pinoys to be proud because in case you didn’t know, this guy became a stylist to the contestants of the TV show Rockstar INXs. Plus, he also got to work with ultra-gorgeous photographer Nigel Barker (of America’s Next Top Model!) Yeah!
It was really a wonderful dinner because aside from the fantastic food, we also had a fantastic time listening to the stories of Tito Gerry.
From Italianni’s, we moved to the nearby Nuvo to meet with Kate and Pam. Everyone enjoyed their martinis and Bailey’s while I opted to go for dessert. Haha! The ladies (by ladies, I really mean Kate and Pam) were looking very hot, I must say!!! And no, I’m not turning hetero here. I’ve always just been an admirer of female beauty, that’s all.
A little before eleven, I already told Hunski that we should get going. We still haven’t recovered the sleeping hours we lost for the past weeks, and I wasn’t really feeling well.
I wish we could have stayed a little longer, but I was just too tired already and any attempt to stay any longer would make me fall asleep on the couch already. Haha!
So that’s how Friday went. It’s a day before my birthday, and yet I feel like I’ve already celebrated it. Hahaha!
Hope you guys had a good Friday.

Some Sentiments...
The other night, Suki, Richie, Hunski and I drove to the Fort to have a drink. We were almost done with the revisions anyway so our night ended early and we decided to just have a drink and enjoy ourselves. We found ourselves at Jill’s at the Fort Strip.
While the three of them enjoyed their cocktails and I enjoyed my mango shake, it was only then that I really got excited about the coming issue. It may sound weird, huh, to think that I know what the content is right from the start. True, but the thing is, when we start working for the magazine, everything just gets so crazy and toxic that all the energy is put into making sure that all the content is there. A couple of days ago, I was on a long distance call to some city in the West because one of our “suppliers” couldn’t get the “thing” we were asking for correctly, and we were already closing the issue. I had no choice but to call them already and give them specific instructions over the phone. (Sorry but this is the only info I can give you.)
So really, it isn’t until moments when we’re much relaxed and we have a drink in our hand that everything begins to sink in, and I realize that we just finished another issue of Icon.
One of the greatest realizations and things that I appreciate most about doing this work for Icon is that it has become as a venue for me to meet all these wonderful people whom I never would have met had it not been for this magazine. Two years ago, the closest that I could be to these people is to read about them on a magazine or the Web and just admire them on my own. Now, here we are, corresponding with them, talking with them, getting to know them.
I couldn’t help but think, “Wow! Was I really just on the phone talking to ----?” or “Wow! Did ---- just send me an email?”
Two things can be gathered from this experience. One, it makes me realize that even if these individuals are already in that certain position or status because of their work or their achievements, they are still humans. (And I’m really thankful that so far, I haven’t encountered any individual who’s arrogant because of his/her status.) Two, this whole thing just makes me realize that if you really want to have something, and that something is good, there will be a way. A perfect example would be the people we featured in the last issue and in this coming issue. During our preparation stage, Richie, Suki, Hunski and I would just decide that these are the people we want in the next issue. We don’t have any idea how to reach them. We don’t have their numbers, their emails, or addresses but somehow, we meet people who help us to reach these people. It’s really wonderful, actually. You can’t help but think that life conspires to make certain things happen.
And for all these blessings, I am thankful (and I’m sure the rest of the Icon team also is.)
Alright, I should stop myself before I start to get more dramatic. Just wait for the next issue of Icon.

New Series to Get Hooked On to...
I never got to watch HBO's Oz series. But based on what bloggers who have watched the show wrote, the show appears to have been addictive. Since I haven't seen even a single episode of the series, I guess I just have to believe what most people say about the show. I think though that it was probably an interesting series because the setting was inside prison.
How many people actually get to go to prison, whether to get incarcerated or to visit someone or for charity work? (I've been to one twice...for volunteer work. One was the Makati City Jail and the other one was the huge Bilibid of Muntinglupa.)
Anyway, for those who have missed Oz or those who are interested to know what goes on behind bars, Fox recently launched a new series Prison Break.
Here's how the story goes. Lincoln Burrows is a dead man walking. Burrows is accused of allegedly killing the brother of the US Vice-President, and for this, he gets the death sentence. His brother, Michael Scofield, being the good brother that he is, devises an operation to get his brother out of prison.
His first problem is to get inside the pen, and to do this, he robs a bank and gets arrested.
During his trial, the judge finds it quite hard to understand why Michael robbed the bank. After all, the Michael is a magna cum laude graduate of a prestigious school and was working as a structural engineer, just before he goes to jail.
Once inside the jail, the real story begins. So many things happened and it seems that Michael realized just a little bit too late that his scheme wouldn't work out smoothly the way he had planned it. Now, he must not only try to save his brother's life, but his own life as well and hopefully, be able to accomplish the main reason why he wanted to go to prison - to have a prison break.
Dominic Purcell plays the role of Lincoln Burrow, while Wentworth Miller takes on the lead role of Michael Scofield. Both men are hot in my opinion though I think many would say that Miller is hotter.
Anyway, this is another show that I'm starting to get addicted to, next to Desperate Housewives. I've seen three episodes already of Prison Break and each episode just leaves me wanting for more.

Anna Wintour and Tofu Pie
Image via Yahoo News
US Vogue editrix Anna Wintour was hit with a tofu pie by anti-fur demonstrators when she attended the Paris fashion week. She was wearing a fur-trimmed black jacket, with an embellished top and a pencil cut skirt when the incident occurred.
According to news reports, Anna was on her way out of the Chloe fashion show last Saturday when she was hit with the tart. (In other reports though, Anna was one her way to the Chanel show. Those reporting that she was on her way to Chanel also reported that Anna rushed to the backstage, where Karl Lagerfeld helped her.) It was reported that a young woman yelled "Fur hag!" as she threw the pie. Anna was reportedly not hurt by the attack, and was even reported to have joked that tofu may be good for the skin.
Following the incident, animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) claimed responsibility for the pie throwing incident. PETA vice president Dan Matthews said that the tofu tart was PETA's response to US Vogue's decision to continue having fur ads, and not print PETA's anti-fur ads despite PETA's offer to pay the same fee.
This is the second attack this year on Anna Wintour, according to news reports, for her unapologetic support for the use of fur in the fashion industry.

Reading and Work
Now that I’m done with school, I thought I would be able to get back to reading. But as it turns out, there’s still much to be done with Icon. However, I did get to start reading It Had to Be You. Two days (well, technically, just a couple of hours since I don't read the entire day) and done with a hundred pages. Not bad in my opinion, huh? And the book's not bad either. It's actually good.
Moving on to Icon work, we’re still working on the next issue. We hope to be with the printers by next week, which means that the coming week will be toxic. I'm expecting successive late nights of editing and proofreading, and maybe some debates on whether to put this photo or not, or to shorten this article or not. Hahaha!
Last week, we had a photo shoot with our cover story. We're really hoping everyone likes our cover story. Personally, I was glad to have met the person. Meeting that individual was such a big surprise because of how humble, how down-to-earth the person is. Such a big surprise because one could easily think that because of that person's position, the person would be unapproachable and a snob.
I wish I could give you an idea who'd be on the cover but that would probably get my head chopped off. Haha! So, just relax awhile and soon, the waiting for the next issue of Icon will come to an end.
Patience, my friends. Patience.

Sunday Dining
Sunday was a pretty non-toxic day.
I spent the first few hours in the morning reading the Beck novel, and then at lunch time, met up with Hunski. He wanted to go to this laptop/PC expo at the Fort and I said I’ll accompany him.
Before going to the expo, we decided to have lunch first. For some reason, we didn't head to the parking lot across the area where Gloria Jean's, Jollibee, Chowking and other cheap fastfood restaurants were. Instead, we just found ourselves at the Fort Strip, which as you know is not really the place to dine when you're on cost-cutting measures. Hahaha!
Anyway, Hunski and I ended up at this nice pasta place, Pasto. Xochi had the pomodoro e basilica and I had a creamy carbonara with grilled chicken strips. We also had pizza margherita. Before our orders arrived, we were both saying to each other, “You know what, we could have cooked this ourselves and we wouldn’t have to pay such a huge amount.” Hahaha!
But after having tasted the food, you could only say that you got your money's worth. The food was actually good. After that delicious lunch, we walked to the nearby Cold Stone Creamery and had Ferrero ice cream with crushed cookies. For a generous scoop of ice cream, I still found the price I paid for it to be outrageous.
But then I told myself, "Hey, we've already begun indulging ourselves so we might as well go all the way." Hahaha! Besides, the ice cream was really good. (Except for the nuts. Ack! I don't like nuts in my ice cream.) Haha! After getting the ice cream from the counter, we decided to sit down at an area where the people working out at Fitness First would have a good view of us and our fattening and sinful ice cream. Does that make us evil? Haha!
From the Fort Strip, we headed to the expo which was quite nearby. Hunski traded in his old (but still working) laptop and bought a new one. He got a good deal because by trading in his laptop, he got a $200 discount so it’s not bad. Plus, the specs of the laptop he got were good.
In the afternoon, we went to UP Diliman and met up with Hunski's friend, Sharon. For about two hours, we went jogging and walking. What’s nice about UP Diliman on a Sunday is that they close the University oval to vehicles for joggers and bikers. It’s SO nice to see so many health-conscious people. At the Sunken Garden, there were groups playing soccer, football and Frisbee. Plus, the atmosphere of UP Diliman on a Sunday is just so relaxing. It's so easy to forget that we're actually in the middle of polluted and noisy Manila.
The bad side though is that after jogging, Sharon wanted to try this fantastic restaurant inside the campus – Chocolate Kiss. Our jogging was probably useless as we ended up having penne with pesto sauce for Sharon, chicken a la kiev with mased potatoes for me and a mushroom cheese melt sandwich with fries for Hunski. For dessert, we all shared a slice of kahlua butter cake. Hahaha!
That Sunday was all about good food and dining.

Forty Looks Like This?!
Image via Style.com
How can one be forty and still look as sexy and as hot as this guy?
And in case you don't recognize the guy, it's no other than the man who brought back the house of Gucci to life - Tom Ford.
Ford is currently featured in the November issue of W magazine.

They're Back!!!
Image via DH Fan Site
The ladies of Wisteria Lane are back!!!
Woo woo woo!!!
Watched the first episode of the second season of Desperate Housewives last night, and I'd have to say that it's still as gripping as the first time I watched it.
I'm not going to spoil things for those who are about to watch the episode. Well, at least let me write about my favorite character - Bree Van De Kamp.
In the finale of the 1st season, Rex Van De Kamp passes away. In the first episode of Season 2, Bree prepares for the funeral of her husband. Still as Stepford-ish as ever, Bree doesn't tell the other ladies that her husband passed away until the clock struck nine a.m. But more than that, Bree already plans out what Rex would wear, what music would be played, what the ceremony would be.
But her plans are not to go without any troubles as Rex's mom Phyllis arrives all hysterical and devastated by the death of her son.
The two women of Rex's life begin a battle for the funeral arrangements, until Bree snaps and threatens to ban her from the funeral. (Talk about girl power!) But when Andrew and Danielle beg Bree to reconsider, Bree changes her mind and reconciles with Phyllis.
During the funeral, the whole Van De Kamp family bid farewell to Rex. Bree is shocked to see the glaring orange prep school tie on Rex (which Phyllis insisted that Rex should wear), instead of the blue Ralph Lauren tie she chose. The minister says the last rites and tells the pallbearers to close the coffin. Just as about the coffin was to be sealed, Bree yells out "Don't close the coffin!"
She then gets up, walks down the aisle of the church, with this fierce look on her face, eyeing the people in search of something. She goes up to Tom Scavo and demands for his tie. Tom gives it to Bree, and then Bree marches up to the coffin, and in front of the whole church, changes Rex's tie.
She then tells Rex, "There. You look magnificent." before walking down the aisle to walk the church.
My reaction to the whole scene, "Who! Totally psychological! I love this girl!"

Waiting to Be Read...
These two babies are waiting to be read. I also reserved a copy of Brokeback Mountain at Fully Booked, but the date of its arrival is still unknown.
With the sudden turn of events - the compre exam that was taken from me, the two papers that were dropped, the oral critique that was also dropped - my semestral break came earlier than expected. To a certain point, I was happy because that meant that I would have time to get back to reading.
Haha! Not!
I was hoping I could start with It Had to Be You last Tuesday, after Icon work at Richie's. But guess what? I got home at one in the morning already. Haha! The following days didn't also give me any chance to turn to page 1 of the Timothy James Beck novel.
I do hope I get to start on it, before the week ends. Otherwise, I would probably get to read it as soon as Icon is already with the printers. But since I don't have any more academic stuff to read, I'm sure I'll be able to find some time to squeeze my reading in my schedule.
Woo woo woo!
Thanks to the Zand Man for the books.

A Big Sigh...
If you're wondering how my comprehensive exam went, it didn't push through.
Yep, you read that right. All the time and effort I put into memorizing theories, understanding research methods, and reading various studies have all been useless.
Why?
Yesterday afternoon, someone from the administrative office calls me to tell me that I will not be allowed to take the exam since my grades for the semester aren't in yet. I reason out that I have been studying for the exam since August and that I am very sure that I would pass both subjects. Still that person didn't allow me to take the exam. I thought of still going to the exam venue this morning, all dressed up in a military inspired attire. I would block the entrance to the exam room, and yell out, "Kung hindi ako mag-c-compre, walang mag-c-compre!!!" (If I don't get to take the compre, no one would take it!!!) Of course, that was just me trying to make the situation humorous.
My biggest complaint is why was I informed only a day ahead of the exam? Isn't it their responsibility to follow-up on students who'll take the compre and make sure that all their deficiencies have been cleared? What was the use of applying for permission to take the compre exam at the start of the semester?
On my part, my fault was that I assumed that all I needed was to pass both subjects this semester for me to be able to take the compre. That's what I understood during the start of the semester when we had the orientation for the compre? I didn't know that I need the actual grades of my subjects.
Oh well.
It's no use blaming anyone now. I'm not depressed or sad. I did feel down for like 15 minutes but I managed to snap out of it immediately after reminding myself, "Everything happens for a reason."

Learning to Be Silent...Not
In one of the group discussions, we were discussing the ways of reporting on population and health issues. Naturally, the topic dwelled on to women and children, violence against women and children. In my head, I was asking, "What about violence against the LGBT community?" But it was okay. I was just listening to the ideas being thrown around.
The faciliator was telling us that when it comes to reporting on rape cases, the names of the women and children victims should be replaced with an alias.
The facilitator then said, "What about men who get raped?"
Surprisingly, the other discussants were surprised at the possibility of men getting raped. Someone wondered who would commit a rape crime against men. Apparently, the discussants were having difficulty imagining men getting raped, and women as the perpetrator of such an act, so one guy commented, "Baka bading pwede pa. (Homosexuals are more likely to do it.)"
It was at that moment that I felt something inside and realized the need to speak up. I just found myself blurting out, "That's sexist of you. To jump to a conclusion that homosexuals would be more likely to commit a rape act."
The group must have been surprised.
Thankfully, the facilitator agreed with me, and the guy who gave the "gay" comment apologized. Was he sincere? Who knows?
For me, the important thing is that I spoke up. I don't know if I should be saddened that the other homo in the room didn't speak up at all. I don't know. It's probably because he thought it was okay. Or that such a comment is a small thing that can be forgiven.
After working on the discrimination assignment, the more that I realized that gays and lesbians should speak up when they hear statements that put down the LGBT community. It is not easy, and I myself won't be able to do it all the time out of fear of isolation, but I guess once in a while, it would help if we do speak up.
